App Ideas That Make Money in 2026, and How to Find Your Own

Lists of app ideas are easy to find and hard to trust. The ideas worth building show up in data: the complaints of people already paying for apps, the posts of people asking for one, and the rivals spending on ads. Here are five that Appleak’s own reads point to, and a way to find yours.

In short

  • The best app ideas fix what users of a paid category already complain about.
  • Check three things before you build: people pay, people complain, people ask.
  • Each idea here comes with the reviews, posts or ads it was read from, and the day.

Where app ideas that make money come from

An app idea makes money when people already pay for something like it and are unhappy with what they get. An empty category can mean nobody wants the thing, not that nobody has thought of it. So start where the money is, and look for what annoys the people spending it.

  • Complaints in the reviews of apps people pay for. A paid category with angry users has room for a better app.
  • People asking for an app by what it should do, on Reddit, X, YouTube and TikTok.
  • Rivals paying for the same ad for months, a sign the category earns enough to advertise.
  • New apps that chart within weeks of release, a sign the category still lets newcomers in.

Five app ideas, from what Appleak read

Each idea is our reading of the evidence under it. The figures are what Appleak read and stored, with the day it read them.

A cooking app that shows its value before the paywall

Asked “why do cooking apps struggle to sell subscriptions” on 5 Sep 2026, Appleak read 1,573 reviews of 15 cooking apps and found 146 that speak to it. The themes mentioned most: paid but still blocked from features (110), value already free elsewhere (102) and forced trial-to-paywall funnel (80).

A fitness subscription that is easy to cancel

Asked “why did people cancel subscription on fitness apps” on 5 Sep 2026, Appleak read 3,105 reviews of 17 apps on both stores and found 88 about cancelling. Its answer: people cancel mainly because they feel tricked into paying, by free trials that charge early, surprise fees and cancellation made deliberately hard.

A meditation app priced for what it does

A search of 1,185 reviews of Calm, Headspace and Insight Timer found 93 with a subscription complaint. The largest groups: too expensive for what it is (31), paywall on the basics (26) and wants a refund, or was refused one (18).

An alarm that wakes deep sleepers, without the ads

An analysis of Alarmy read 154 reviews, averaging 4.42 stars. What its users praise first: it actually wakes heavy/deep sleepers when other alarms fail. The fault they name first: excessive and intrusive ads, especially after turning off alarm.

A free calorie tracker with photo and barcode scanning

Listening for “calorie tracker” on 3 Oct 2026, Buyer Signals caught a Reddit post in r/Bulk asking: “Whats the best nutrtion calorie tracker app which is free and has ai scan and barcode scanner.”

And the money already in that category

On 8 Oct 2026, Cal AI had 28 creatives in Meta’s Ad Library. 19 of them led with the same headline, “Limited Time Free Trial 👉”, first shown 18 May 2026 and still running that day. 24 used the same line of body text: “AI can now count your calories—just from a photo.” A rival that keeps one offer running for months is paying to reach the same people.

How to test an app idea before you build it

  1. Name the category and its leaders. Open the top grossing chart for the category. If nothing in it earns, think again before going further.
  2. Read why users leave. Ask a category report why people quit or cancel the leading apps, and read the themes with their counts and quotes.
  3. Count the complaint you would fix. Search the reviews for the exact words. One angry review is an anecdote; dozens across several apps are a pattern.
  4. Look for people asking. Listen on Reddit, X, YouTube and TikTok for posts that describe the app you have in mind.
  5. Check that rivals spend. Ads that run for months mean someone is paying to win these users, and earning it back.
  6. Check that newcomers get in. Rising apps shows which new releases are charting. If none are, the category may be closed to new apps.
  7. Write the idea in one line. Who it is for, the complaint it fixes and the price. Build the smallest version that does that.

Signs an app idea can make money

  • The top grossing apps in the category make money from subscriptions or purchases, not only from ads.
  • Users complain about price, billing or a paywall, so they would pay a fairer app.
  • The same complaint shows up across several apps, not only one.
  • People post asking for an app that does the thing, by name of the job rather than of an app.
  • Rivals keep paying for ads, and new apps still reach the charts.

App ideas to be careful with

  • An idea nobody pays for yet. No paid rivals can mean no market, not an open one.
  • The top app with one more feature. Users switch to get rid of what annoys them, not for more of everything.
  • An idea built on one review or one post. Count before you trust it.
  • A revenue estimate read as a fact. Figures from outside an app are estimates, and installs are a range.

Questions

What app ideas make money in 2026?

The ones that fix what users of a paid category already complain about. In the reads on this page that meant cooking and fitness apps people can trust with their card, meditation priced for what it gives, and an alarm without the ads. Look for paying users who are unhappy, not for an empty market.

How do I find app ideas that have not been made?

Read what people ask for and cannot find: posts on Reddit and X that describe an app by what it should do, and reviews asking for a feature an app does not have. Often the app exists but does the job badly, which is an opening too.

How can I tell if my app idea is good before I build it?

Check three things: people already pay in the category, users of the leading apps complain about something you can fix, and people ask for the fix in public. If all three hold, build the smallest version that fixes it.

Is it a bad idea to build an app that already exists?

Not by itself. A category with paying users shows the demand is real. The question is what would make those users switch, and their reviews tell you.

Can Appleak find app ideas for me?

It finds the evidence: the complaints in a category’s reviews, counted and quoted, the people asking for an app, the new apps charting and the ads rivals pay for. Choosing the idea is yours.

Find the gap in a category you know.

Ask what its users are unhappy about, and get it counted and quoted.
